I’m no longer running group meetings under present circumstances, but am still offering a range of options for writers so that you can take full advantage of your time. There are four basic options so I’m hoping that there’ll be something to suit everyone.
1: The 250-Word Challenge and Weekly Writing Tasks
This option is for those who’d like some input and the stimulus of regular tasks. In these strange and unsettling times it seems quite hard for many of us to focus on a long and complex piece of writing. Here’s some encouragement to write a really short story or a poem that you can share with others every week. The challenge is for you to write a piece of flash fiction of exactly 250 words (including the title) or a poem of up to 20 lines (including the title) on a theme I send out each Monday. You email your work to me by the following Sunday, and I compile all the stories and poems I receive and send them out to all participants on Monday. If you’d like feedback from the rest of the group, just add your email at the bottom of your piece. I add a couple of pages of writing exercises, ideas, tasks and competitions to the 250-Word Challenge each week for those who might like to write something longer. The fee for this option is £20 in total for five weeks, payable by bank transfer
2: Written Critiques
I offer detailed written feedback on pieces that you email to me. My fee for this service is £30 for one piece writing of up to 2200 words. If you’d like to commit to a series of 5 critiques, the fee will be £140. This type of commitment seems to work well as a means of providing deadlines and motivation to write.
3: Phone or FaceTime one-to-ones
I am also offering one-to-one calls on the phone or via computer. Zoom or FaceTime without video seems to work best. The idea is that we both have your writing in front of us on our screens. This gives us the chance to go through your piece line by line, analyse it in detail and discuss what you might write next. I charge £30 for an hour for these sessions. If you’d like to commit to a series of 5 one-to-ones, the fee will be £140.
4: Group Feedback sessions via Zoom
Some students have said that they’d appreciate group sessions with me on Zoom to share writing. I feel that this option would work most efficiently if you contact your fellow writers and get together a group of up to 6 people. Then you can book a session with me at at time that suits us all. That shouldn’t be particularly tricky at the moment… The aim is for each of you to read out your work and receive feedback from me and other members of the group. (I would also leave ten minutes in the middle so that we can equip ourselves with tea/gin and tonic etc.) I’ve found Zoom surprisingly straightforward to use, and it lends itself well to sharing work. You wouldn’t need to download anything and I would email clear instructions before your first session. You just let me know that you want a group session and we agree a date and time. I email a link to your inbox, and you just click on this when the session is due to begin. The fee for a group session would be a total of £60 per session of 1 hour 45 minutes, to be divided between participants.
